2/11/2014 0 Comments Olympic Moments: Team NorwayOne of the great thing about curling is the curlers. From weekly league players to international comeptitors, curlers are a friendly group of people passionate about their sport. Olympians are no different, as you will read as some of our members share their memories of meeting Olympic curlers through the years.
Club member Rich Collins said: “I had the pleasure of driving the Norwegian curling team around for a week when they came to the US for the Men’s World Curling Championship in Lowell, Massachusetts in 2006. “It was Thomas Ulsrud‘s first bonspiel as skip of Team Norway. Torge Norrgard was the vice, and the current front end were the Alternate and score keeper for the team. In addition to taking them from their hotel to the arena, I drove them to shopping malls, restaurants and sight seeing. I got to have several meals with them and got to know them pretty well – they are a great bunch of guys! I also was their flag bearer during the closing ceremonies, where they were awarded the bronze medal! ” Christoffer “Boppy” Svea, the second on the current team, and the one who had the idea of wearing the now famous curling pants, was so nice and gave me a uniform shirt, and the whole team autographed the small Norwegian flag that flew on the van all week. It was an awesome experience!”

Travis Hamilton and Julie Tsamoutales will be competing against East Clubs to represent the region at the USA Curling Mixed National Championship to be held in Wisconsin in March.
The USA Curling Mixed National Championship is a regional-based, geographic championship aimed at determining our top 10 mixed teams from within the USCA regions and/or states. Winners from this weekend’s playdowns at the Chesapeake Curling Club will go on to compete at the Tri-City Curling Club in Wisconsin Rapids March 15-22. Julie and Travis are no strangers to the curling championship circuit. Both competed for CCVa last summer at the USA National Arena Curling Championships. We will be cheering for you from Richmond! GOOD CURLING! We were delighted to have WSLS-10 anchors John Carlin and Lindsey Ward visit us and the Richmond Ice Zone on Friday to throw a few stones for the curling portion of the 2014 Anchor Games challenge. All this week at 6pm, the Roanoke station will air their journey as they attempt popular Winter Olympic sports in the quest for bragging rights. Both John and Lindsey did a great job, so we aren’t sure who will get the medal. In the meantime, they have posted a few pictures from their visit. Be sure to tune in next week to WSLS-10 to see who will win the 2014 Anchor Games!
The Richmond Ice Zone was filled with enthusiasm during a Media Open House hosted by the Curling Club of Virginia. We were thrilled to welcome crews from the Richmond Times Dispatch, Chesterfield Observer, Hopewell News, Chesterfield Times Dispatch and an NBC TV team from Roanoke. We all had a spectacularly good time and were impressed by the athleticism of the journalists, reporters and photographers who came out to learn more about the coolest sport on earth.
