(FORT WAYNE, Ind.) – History will be stamped tomorrow as the very first champions of USA Curling’s newest championship event will be determined. After a busy day of action at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena in Fort Wayne, Ind., the playoff field for tomorrow’s semifinals are now set.
The day started off right for the CCVa men with a win in the first draw against Team Moir from Denver, with a final score 8-5. They continued the fight that afternoon against Team Dittberner from Vickingland, Minn., but Dittberner prevailed 10-3. The CCVa ladies also kept the stones moving against Team Walsh keeping it tight into the last end, but Walsh won 8-5 to advance to the finals against Team Knott. Team Knott had a narrow victory over Team Tsamoutales on the first day of the event. At stake tomorrow is winning the inaugural men’s and women’s titles at the 2013 Arena National Championships. Four teams clinched spots last night and the final four advanced today out of the B side of the bracket. For more information and scores from today’s games, see the USCA website. Both teams from CCVa are still playing hard, Our ladies had an 11-3 win Friday morning against Team Hamm from Lansing, Mich. The men played early in the first draw, putting up a big fight but lost by in an extra end by one, for a final score Parker 10-9. The four-day national championship, featuring 19 men’s and 13 women’s teams from across the United States, will culminate on Sunday afternoon. Two women’s teams and two men’s teams have advanced to the playoffs so far, which leaves half of the playoff bracket complete. The 2013 Arena Nationals action picks back up on Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. ET. Six rounds of action will be played throughout Saturday to determine Sunday’s playoff field. The four-day national championship, featuring 19 men’s and 13 women’s teams from across the United States, is being hosted by the Fort Wayne Curling Club. Several teams remain undefeated in the double knockout championship event, which will conclude on Sunday afternoon. This evening, CCVa’s Team Tsamoutales from fought a close game against the host’s team, Team Lampkins from Fort Wayne. It came down to the last rock in the last end, but Lampkins finished with an 8-7 win. Earlier in the day, Team Cooke from CCVa suffered a tough loss against the undefeated Team Robinson from Pittsburg. They were selected to compete in the inaugural Arena National Championships, sweeping into Fort Wayne, Ind., on July 18. Nineteen men’s and 13 women’s teams will compete to reign supreme on the national arena scene. The four-day national championship will take place at the Fort Wayne Curling Club, housed in the Canlan Ice Sports Arena.
Teams from Arizona to South Carolina will compete in this first-ever championship, which was designed to give club curlers who utilize arena-style ice conditions a place to duke it out to determine the top arena team in the nation. Team Cooke is made up of past president Brent Cooke (Midlothian, Va.), Richard Collins (Midlothian, Va.), Travis Hamilton (Richmond, Va.), and club president Scott Walters (Midlothian, Va.). Representing the ladies on Team Tsamoutales are Julie Tsamoutales (Upper Marlboro, Md.), Connie Walters (Midlothian, Va.), Kirsten Collins (Midlothian, Va.), and Pamela Kemp (North Chesterfield, Va.).
