The Club was honored and surprised this past weekend in Connecticut during the Grand National Curling Club‘s (GNCC) annual meeting when a Presidential recognition award was given to CCVa’s Kirsten Collins. The GNCC is the regional curling association for the East Coast and includes clubs from Maine to Florida. Over the summer and fall, Kirsten worked with GNCC President Sally MacKenzie and GNCC Secretary Joel Leneker on a unique design to promote local area curling while also showcasing the 48 curling clubs in our region. More than 1,000 tshirts in two different colors were sold to clubs on the East Coast to assist with local curling efforts during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Others recognized with a Presidential award include Phyllis and Hannah Ely from Rochester Curling Club, and Joel Leneker from Nutmeg Curling. Joel designed the GNCC booth for the USA Curling Nationals competition that took place this year in Philadelphia. Phyllis and Hannah designed the Edie Savett Memorial pin for Sportsmanship that was presented at the GNCC Junior Playdowns. This year’s GNCC Outstanding Service Awards went to Carl Thomas of Utica and Kayuta Lake Curling Clubs, Mark Mooney of Plainfield Curling Club, and Russ Lemke of Cape Cod Curling Club. Busy with club activities here in Richmond, Kirsten was not present for the award but said she was very surprised and honored to be recognized. Congratulations to all recipients!
